Replace your polite smile with a confident response
when the next Belgian starts speaking to you in Dutch.
Belgian Dutch lessons
one to one, online.
For people in Flanders who are ready to start speaking Dutch.
A minute of me, so you know who you'd be having lessons with.
Who this is for
You've been in Flanders a while now.
Maybe your partner is Flemish,
and their family is warm, welcoming,
and completely incomprehensible after the second glass of wine.
Maybe your kids come home from school speaking a language
you don't quite have yet.
Maybe you've thought about working in Dutch one day
but haven't said it out loud in case it sounds too optimistic.
Maybe you're just trying to make some Belgian friends
or get to know the ones you have in their own language.
How it works
👥 Online, on Teams. From your kitchen, your office, wherever you are. Nothing to install that you haven't already got.⏱︎ Fifty minutes. Long enough to get somewhere, short enough to survive a working day.🏃➡️ Built around your week, not a syllabus. Whether you're about to have a parent-teacher meeting or are prepping for your first job interview in Belgium, we'll practise what you need.▶︎ Wherever you're starting from is where we start. There's no level you were supposed to have reached by now.
Why it's been hard
The app: Duolingo is okay at the thing it does, which is making you parrot vocabulary and basic phrases. It has simply never once had to answer your mother-in-law.Group classes: Nothing wrong with them, but 10+ other people in the room means very little time speaking yourself, and going at a pace that is not geared towards you.The process: Learning a language as an adult takes real time and energy. And then there's the discomfort: not knowing what to learn next, and being unsure of yourself in front of the very people you want to connect with. It leaves you short on confidence at the exact moment you need it.So you soon switch back to English, and then there's no practice, and then it's a year later. We'll be rehearsing every situation together so you feel ready when it happens outside our classes. One more thing, if you're in Flanders: plenty of courses teach the Dutch of the Netherlands. It's not another language, but the pronunciation, expressions and communication culture are all very different. I'm Belgian, so I teach what the people around you actually speak.
What my students
are saying
Elena: "My boyfriend's parents were amazed by my progress."
Iga: "My comfort of living in Belgium now is much higher."
András: "After laying the foundation, something just clicked and I was able to think in Dutch."
